Nicosia: A third Cypriot donkey was recently born at the Environmental Information Center of Athalassa National Forest Park, the Department of Forests has announced. In a press release, it was noted that the hospitable environment and the systematic care provided by the Department of Forests at the Athalassa National Forest Park are instrumental in the reproduction and survival of Cypriot donkeys, as well as other domestic animals and birds.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Cypriot donkey is considered an endangered species and has been declared a protected animal since 2008. The press release highlights the significant role this animal played in rural life on the island, with nearly all families in Cyprus historically owning at least one donkey, as it served as a means of transportation and an essential assistant in agricultural and forestry activities.
Director of the Department, Dr. Savvas Ezekiel, has proposed the name Aronas for the newborn donkey, a name that translates to strong-built or imposing. The area where the domestic animals and birds are located is open and accessible to the public 24 hours a day.
