Nicosia: Fisheries and Oceans Commissioner, Costas Kadis, highlighted the pressing challenges facing the European Union, discussing issues ranging from security and geopolitics to the climate crisis, energy dependence, and food security. His remarks came in response to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's State of the Union address delivered on Wednesday.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Kadis emphasized the complex environment in which the EU currently operates, citing the war in Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, and rising energy and fuel prices as significant challenges. He underscored the need for European policies to reduce dependence on external sources, particularly in the areas of fuels, food, and raw materials, to enhance the Union's self-sufficiency.

Kadis further noted the importance of bolstering the competitiveness of the European economy, which includes completing the single market. He also mentioned that President von der Leyen's emphasis on defending European territory holds particular significance for Cyprus.

Additionally, the Commissioner pointed out the necessity of strengthening the EU's geopolitical position and enhancing relations with Canada. He highlighted the importance of Canadian Prime Minister's presence at the debate, noting that closer EU-Canada relations are part of a larger effort to collaborate with partners who share common priorities with the Union.
