Nicosia: The State Collection currently houses 4,480 works of art by Cypriot artists, with 61 of these acquired in 2023 and 72 in 2024, according to Petros Dymiotis, Cultural Officer of the Visual Arts Sector of the Department of Contemporary Culture. Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Dymiotis provided insights into the acquisition and placement processes for these artworks.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Dymiotis highlighted that there are specific procedures for integrating artworks into public buildings. These procedures include enriching public spaces with art and purchasing new pieces, each governed by distinct criteria and overseen by special committees. The acquisitions are sourced from artists’ solo exhibitions and workshops, ensuring a diverse array of contemporary Cypriot art.
Dymiotis explained that the primary criteria for purchasing a work of art are its relevance to the needs of the State Collection and its significance in the evolution of Cypriot art. The State Collection, which currently boasts 4,480 works, relies on the Register of Works of Art at the State Gallery of Contemporary Cyprus Art for its records.
A small number of the newly acquired artworks are displayed in public buildings, promoting contemporary Cypriot art. Some pieces adorn the embassies of the Republic of Cyprus abroad, while others are loaned to decorate the offices of government officials. In several instances, officials personally select the artworks to be displayed in their offices, often preferring paintings or sculptures.
Dymiotis noted that most artworks not on display are stored in the State Gallery’s warehouse, a facility equipped to preserve art under special conditions. Additionally, a portion of the collection is housed in the ‘Majestic’ branch of the State Gallery.
