Soon Positive Results on COLA, Effort for Reforms Ongoing, President Says

Nicosia: President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said on Monday that very soon positive results are expected regarding COLA (Cost of Living Allowance). Replying to questions by journalists upon his arrival to the 45th Annual General Assembly of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities, in Nicosia, President Christodoulides said that the great effort for reforms is ongoing.

According to Cyprus News Agency, when asked about pending reforms in view of the Presidency of the Council of the EU, President Christodoulides emphasized the ongoing efforts to reconstruct the state of the ’60s to pave the way for bold reforms. He stated, “This great effort is not over. We should and we dare to touch on difficult issues that we must change.”

Addressing the issue of COLA, President Christodoulides expressed optimism about the upcoming positive outcomes and noted that “there are no dead ends.” The negotiations on the future of COLA have been ongoing for several months between employers, trade unions, and the government. However, the discussions seemed to stall last week when employers rejected the latest compromise proposal.

When asked about the outcome of the Foreign Minister’s visit to Israel, President Christodoulides stated that an announcement would be made once there is something substantial to report.
