Moni: Six out of the thirteen mobile desalination units in Moni are currently operational, with plans to have the remaining units up and running by the end of the week, according to George Kazantzis, Acting Director of the Water Development Department (WDD).
According to Cyprus News Agency, the activation process has faced delays due to technical challenges. Technicians from the manufacturing company based in the United Arab Emirates are addressing these issues. Kazantzis noted that while six units are fully operational, two additional units are in trial operation. The technicians continue to encounter problems with the automation systems and other technical aspects, which have slowed progress.
Each desalination unit is capable of producing approximately a thousand cubic meters of water daily. The first six units are already contributing to the water supply for the Nicosia, Larnaca, and Famagusta districts. Kazantzis emphasized that by utilizing desalinated water from these units, it will be possible to con
serve water from the Kouris dam for the Limassol district.
In the Paphos district, one desalination unit has been in trial operation since Tuesday but has not yet met the required water quality standards for network integration. The unit is expected to connect to the network shortly, while another unit will begin trial operations on Monday. Larger units are anticipated to start functioning in September.
Kazantzis also addressed the water supply challenges in the fire-affected mountainous areas of Limassol. Although these areas are not under the jurisdiction of the WDD, the department’s crews are actively assisting in resolving issues. Despite early water supply efforts, pipeline damage due to fires and increased pressure remains a concern. The WDD is committed to providing ongoing support to address these challenges.
