Nicosia: Shopkeepers and supermarkets are happy with consumer demand during the Easter period, especially on essential goods, their representatives told CNA on Monday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Stefanos Koursaris, General Secretary of the Confederation of Pan-Cyprian Organizations of Craftsmen, Professionals, and Shopkeepers (POVEK), reported that there was increased activity in essential goods, as is customary during every Easter holiday, despite higher prices for certain products.
Koursaris noted that the market operated at satisfactory levels, largely due to consumer spending on festive feasts. He mentioned that most of the consumer budget was allocated to essential products. However, the increased prices might have deterred consumers from spending on other products, such as clothing and footwear, which usually see heightened interest during Easter holidays.
He also highlighted a positive trend where consumers showed preference for small businesses. ‘Despite the increased price of meat, people supported small businesses, the small butcher shops, rather than opting for the price difference found in the large supermarkets,’ Koursaris added.
Andreas Hadjiadamou, Executive Secretary of the Pancyprian Supermarkets Association, expressed complete satisfaction with supermarket activity during the festive season. He noted that demand was particularly high in the last 2-3 days leading up to Easter. He emphasized that supermarkets made significant efforts to offer the best possible service and maintain stable prices, especially during the final days of the holiday period.
Hadjiadamou also estimated that the level of activity in supermarkets this year matched that of last Easter, indicating that operations proceeded smoothly.
