Reports About Israeli National Attacked for Speaking Hebrew Unfounded, Sources Tell CNA

Nicosia: Israeli media reports on the beating of an Israeli national at a hotel in Limassol, supposedly because he was speaking Hebrew, are unfounded, police sources told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) on Tuesday, noting that the incident involved a scuffle with fellow nationals.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Israeli media reports, which have been circulating widely online since Monday, refer to the brutal assault of a young Israeli based on claims made on social media by his father. According to the father, the attack was carried out by individuals who heard his son speaking Hebrew at the entrance of the hotel. According to the same reports, the young man has returned to Israel, where he underwent eye surgery.

Police sources told CNA that 'what is being written is not accurate' and that the incident occurred between Israelis during an event at the hotel. 'The Israeli national allegedly got into an altercation with compatriots of his and has declared in writing that he has no complaint,' the same sources added.

The case is being investigated by the Episkopi Police Station.
