Doha:The exchange of expertise and the strengthening of operational cooperation were key focuses during a visit by Kostas Fytiris, the Minister of Justice and Public Order, to the facilities of the Qatar Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) and the International Search and Rescue Team.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the visit, characterized by a friendly atmosphere and open dialogue, aimed at developing substantive cooperation between the agencies of Cyprus and Qatar. Opportunities were identified for leveraging Lekhwiya's expertise and training infrastructure in various security and emergency response areas.
During the visit, the Minister was briefed on Lekhwiya's organization, equipment, and operational capabilities, with a particular emphasis on crisis management and the coordination of agencies involved in responding to serious security incidents. A significant part of the visit included a presentation of the International Search and Rescue Team's capabilities, which holds INSARAG's 'Heavy' certification in urban search and rescue and has participated in international disaster response missions.
The press release noted that Lekhwiya's expertise offers prospects for practical cooperation with Cyprus' Fire Service, especially the Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK), in urban search and rescue and disaster response. There are also opportunities for collaboration with the Mobile Immediate Action Unit (MMAD), including the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit, through specialized training, the exchange of operational experience, and joint exercises on counter-terrorism and crisis management.
This visit is part of Minister Fytiris' official trip to Qatar, which has included meetings with Qatar's Minister of the Interior and visits to the National Command Centre and the General Directorate of Coastal and Border Security.
