Nicosia: There have been no cases of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the areas under the control of the Republic, the Agriculture Ministry's Veterinary Services informed the Cyprus News Agency on Thursday. They emphasized that appropriate preventive measures are being implemented. A team of experts from the EU Veterinary Emergency Team of the Commission is expected to conduct an on-site review following an FMD incident reported in the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Veterinary Services confirmed that no FMD cases have been detected in the government-controlled areas. They assured that preventive measures are currently in place, and the arrival of the EU Veterinary Emergency Team of the Commission is anticipated soon for an in-depth review and investigation of the situation.
In response to inquiries about vaccinations against FMD, the Veterinary Services clarified that vaccination is not practiced in the Republic's controlled areas. This is because the preventive application of FMD vaccination is not covered under the EU Veterinary Legislation. They noted that emergency suppressive or protective vaccination might be considered if FMD cases are confirmed within a Member State.
The Veterinary Services reiterated their commitment to taking all necessary measures to ensure animal health and welfare, protect public health, maintain the availability of safe livestock products, and facilitate smooth EU trade and trade with third countries.
