The President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides expects an update on yesterday's meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the margins of the NATO Summit in Washington, he said in his statements to the press on Thursday, on the sidelines of the commemoration of the heroes of Mari at the "Evangelos Florakis" Naval Base. Asked about the meeting between Erdogan and Mitsotakis last night in Washington, the President of the Republic said that he has not yet been informed, adding, however, that there was an understanding before the meeting on all the messages to be conveyed and that he expects an update within the day. Asked if there was also communication with Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, President Christodoulides said that there had been an exchange of messages with the UN Secretary General's Personal Envoy, adding that the meeting she will seek today with the Turkish Foreign Minister, who is also in Washington on the sidelines of the NATO Summit , is expected. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
