President Christodoulides Vows to Resolve Cyprus Issue

Limnatis:President Nikos Christodoulides has pledged a resolute commitment to resolving the Cyprus issue and reuniting the country despite the prevailing challenges.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides made this pledge during a memorial service for EOKA hero Demetris Charalambous in Limnatis. He emphasized the significance of the EOKA anti-colonial struggle in establishing the Republic of Cyprus, an internationally recognized EU member state.

The President addressed the illegal Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, emphasizing that the current state of affairs cannot define the future of the country. He reaffirmed the focus on resuming peace talks to achieve a viable and functional solution.

Highlighting the legacy of EOKA heroes, President Christodoulides stressed the importance of preserving historical memory. He noted that maintaining the continuity of Cypriot Hellenism's historical and collective memory is crucial for ensuring the enduring presence of Cyprus.

In his speech, the President honored Demetris Charalambous as a patriot, freedom fighter, and hero, whose enduring example remains significant in Cypriot history.

Cyprus remains divided following Turkey's 1974 invasion and occupation of its northern third, with past UN-led peace efforts hindered by Turkish intransigence. The last negotiations in 2017 at Crans-Montana ended without agreement.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres plans to convene another meeting in a broader format after sufficient preparation, having secured consensus from both sides and the guarantor powers. María Angela Holguín, Guterres' Personal Envoy, will engage with the parties, while Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto serves as the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus.
