Nicosia:President Nikos Christodoulides is set to hold a new meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General's personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, on Tuesday afternoon. The meeting, announced by the Presidency, is scheduled for 1515 local time.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Holguin recently met with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on Monday. Additionally, a tripartite meeting involving Holguin and the two leaders is planned for November 9.
President Christodoulides has indicated that the Greek Cypriot side is awaiting responses to proposals submitted to the United Nations, as well as to issues discussed with the envoy. Holguin expressed optimism following her discussions with the Turkish Cypriot leader, especially in anticipation of the upcoming tripartite meeting.
Cyprus has remained divided since 1974, following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Numerous rounds of UN-led peace talks have failed to produce results, largely due to what has been described as Turkish intransigence. The most recent negotiations, which took place in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, concluded without agreement.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, whose term is nearing its end, has announced plans to convene another meeting in a broader format, pending adequate preparation, though no timeline has been provided. He has secured the consensus of both the involved parties and the guarantor powers for this initiative. María Angela Holguín, as Guterres' Personal Envoy on Cyprus, is tasked with engaging the parties. Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto serves as the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, succeeding EU special envoy Johannes Hahn.
