Nicosia:President Nikos Christodoulides expressed optimism about upcoming discussions with the Turkish Cypriot leader, set for Tuesday, aimed at achieving positive developments. He also mentioned that a tripartite meeting is planned for October involving himself, the Turkish Cypriot leader, and UN Secretary-General's personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the President, speaking at an event celebrating the 150th anniversary of ESTIA newspaper, indicated that discussions are ongoing with proposed dates for Holguin's arrival and a joint meeting. He noted that the Greek Cypriot side has responded positively and expects a similar response from the Turkish Cypriot side.
President Christodoulides expressed hope for positive announcements following the meeting. He mentioned that while the UN will announce Holguin's arrival date, it is expected sometime in October. Regarding the possibility of announcing a new crossing point, the President conveyed optimism but refrained from confirming details.
He emphasized readiness to proceed with announcements and address issues such as substance, methodology, and confidence-building measures, contingent on a positive response. When asked about the Turkish Cypriot side's views, he deferred, saying, "I have already commented on his interview; let us wait and see what happens tomorrow."
The context of these discussions is the long-standing division of Cyprus since 1974, following Turkey's invasion and occupation of the northern third of the island. Previous UN-led peace talks have not succeeded, primarily due to Turkish intransigence. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres plans to convene another meeting after adequate preparations, with the consensus of both sides and guarantor powers. Maria Angela Holguin is tasked with engaging the parties, alongside the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, Raffaele Fitto.
