Nicosia:President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides emphasized that the upcoming visit of the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, and the results of the EU's efforts on the Cyprus problem will be crucial in deciding whether a broader meeting under the UN Secretary-General will be held.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Christodoulides made these remarks following a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman at the UN-protected area of Nicosia International Airport. The meeting, which lasted about an hour and a half, focused on substantive and methodological issues.
Christodoulides described the meeting as productive, noting that there were many questions and clarifications from both sides. He stated that discussions would continue during Holguin's visit, who is expected to arrive on the island on October 29. Several bilateral meetings are planned, leading to a joint meeting.
The President also mentioned Confidence-Building Measures, referencing initiatives related to the environment and cultural artifact exchanges. He is awaiting responses from Erhurman regarding certain proposals, some of which are among the 19 proposals submitted by his side. Notably, a specific proposal on opening new crossing points awaits a response, with one alternative already rejected.
Christodoulides declined to disclose details about the crossing points, emphasizing the importance of substance over communication at this stage. He is still waiting for responses on several proposals and expressed a willingness to revisit rejected ones with further explanations.
The President highlighted ongoing initiatives, including joint meetings with Technical Committees on Youth and Cultural Heritage. A proposal for exchanging cultural artifacts received a positive response from the Turkish Cypriot leader, and relevant lists will be exchanged to proceed.
Two key factors will determine the possibility of a broader UN meeting the discussions during Holguin's visit and the EU's efforts. Christodoulides also awaits briefing on a significant meeting involving Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and European Council President Antonio Costa.
Holguin's visit will involve multiple meetings with Christodoulides, as necessary. The President plans another one-to-one meeting with Erhurman before Holguin's arrival. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, with previous UN-led talks failing to reach a resolution. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres plans to convene another meeting after adequate preparations.
