President Briefs MED9 Summit on Cyprus’ Proposal for Gaza Reconstruction

Nicosia: Cyprus’ role in the effort to address the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East region was presented Monday by President Nikos Christodoulides, during the MED9 Summit in Slovenia. The President presented the six-point proposal of the Republic of Cyprus on the pillars of security, humanitarian aid, and the reconstruction of Gaza, based on the plan by US President Donald Trump.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Director of his Press Office Victoras Papadopoulos said in a written statement that King Abdullah of Jordan participated in the second part of the Summit. During the first part, the leaders of MED9 countries discussed issues related to the Multiannual Financial Framework and EU Competitiveness.

President Christodoulides presented the priorities of the upcoming Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, which include the MFF and Competitiveness, as well as other issues of particular importance on the European agenda. The leaders discussed the situation in the Middle East during a working lunch.

The President informed them about the Government’s six-point proposal in relation to Gaza, based on the US President’s plan, expressing once again the readiness and determination of the Republic of Cyprus to play its humanitarian role and contribute to peace, security, and prosperity in the region. The important role of Jordan in providing humanitarian aid and hosting refugees was also highlighted, and the need to maintain security and stability in the region, in which the EU has strategic interests, were also underlined.
