President and Chevron Discuss Timetables for ‘Aphroditi’ Development, According to Spokesperson

New york: In the Government’s energy planning, strict adherence to timetables is among its priorities, said Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, something which was discussed during a meeting between President Nikos Christodoulides and Javier La Rosa, the new President of Chevron (BAEC), in New York, on Monday.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated in his address to journalists that this meeting marked the first interaction between the President of the Republic and the new President of Chevron. Letymbiotis emphasized that President Christodoulides reaffirmed the strong partnership between the Republic of Cyprus and Chevron, highlighting that the presence of such a company in the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) represents a significant vote of confidence.

Letymbiotis mentioned that the discussion focused on the timetables that have been established. He reiterated that in the Government’s energy planning, following these timetables is a priority, and so far, all deadlines are being met. He added that the completion of the “prefit” is anticipated by the end of the year, while offshore geotechnical and geological surveys for subsea installations and the pipeline route to Egypt have been in progress since June.

The Spokesperson noted that President Christodoulides and the company’s representatives agreed to maintain close, regular communication, both with the relevant Ministry and personally with him, due to the significant interest in advancing energy plans. He also referred to a recent agreement with Egypt, describing it as a ‘very important, landmark agreement’ that has laid the foundation for the swift development of the field.

Furthermore, the Spokesperson articulated that the primary objective is the rapid development of the natural resources within the Cypriot EEZ, benefiting primarily the Cypriot consumer and aiding in the growth and utilization of the nation’s natural wealth. When questioned about whether Chevron’s commitment sends messages amidst geopolitical developments, Letymbiotis affirmed that the presence and investment of a company like Chevron in the Cypriot EEZ indeed convey significant messages. The close cooperation between Chevron and the Republic of Cyprus, along with the company’s dedication to developing the ‘Aphrodite’ field, underscores a robust vote of confidence in both the development of Cyprus’s natural resources and the geopolitical importance of the Cypriot EEZ.
