President Affirms Government’s Support for Greece-Cyprus Electricity Interconnection

Nicosia: The Government is in favour of the strategic objective concerning the electricity interconnection between Greece and Cyprus (Great Sea Interconnector-GSI), President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides stated, adding that it was jointly decided with the Greek Prime Minister 'to proceed with updating the feasibility study.'

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides addressed concerns about alleged doublespeak by the Government regarding the electricity interconnection project. On the sidelines of the Presentation of the Priorities of the Presidency of the Council of the EU in Lefkara, he emphasized that 'there is no doublespeak by the Government' and that 'there never has been.'

'There is a single position from the Government, clearly in favour of the electricity interconnection between Greece and Cyprus,' President Christodoulides reiterated. He explained that the interconnection 'is one of the three main pillars of our energy strategy.'

The President further elaborated that 'the Government, precisely because it is responsible, as is the Greek Government, decided jointly with the Greek Prime Minister, and in fact at his suggestion, to proceed with an update of the feasibility study, also in view of the interest shown by other parties, by other countries, in participating in this strategically important project.'
