Police Arrest 18, Seize 4,000 Firecrackers Ahead of Easter Festivities

Nicosia: Cyprus Police made 18 arrests and seized over 4,000 firecrackers in the fortnight before Easter celebrations in checks islandwide, the police press office has told CNA.

According to Cyprus News Agency, between April 7 and 21, the Police carried out 2,334 checks in parks, church premises, and other open spaces frequented by young people, and stopped to check 1,120 individuals. The Police made 18 arrests for possession of firecrackers and related offences such as rioting, illegal assembly, possession and use of firecrackers, possession of offensive tools, theft of tires, among others. Minors were among those arrested, the Police said.

Over 4,000 firecrackers have been seized, and as the Police representative mentioned, they found a 45-year-old man in Paphos who had 55 factory firecrackers and 4 fireworks hidden in his car on Holy Saturday.

Asked about the investigations into the death of a 22-year-old who lost his life in Strovolos, the Police officer stated that the examinations indicate it was an accident, adding that statements will be taken from all those present at the scene.
