Nicosia: The Perseid meteor shower is set to provide a captivating display under the moonless skies of Cyprus, peaking on the night of Wednesday, August 12. A series of events are organized in the island's mountainous regions to celebrate this celestial phenomenon.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus Astronomy Society President Chrysanthos Fakas and AstroVerce Astronomy Club founder Sotiris Savvides have outlined several activities planned in Kyperounta and Amiantos, with the Troodos Observatory also hosting events to mark the occasion. Fakas highlighted the Perseids as one of the most remarkable meteor showers annually, noting that this year's moonless sky conditions will enhance its visibility.
An astronomy night in Kyperounta is being organized by the Cyprus Astronomy Society (ASTREK), the Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation (CSEO), and the Fakas Observatory, in collaboration with the Community Council. The event will commence at 21:00 in the courtyard of Agios Arsenios church, where attendees are encouraged to bring warm clothing and blankets. Talks will be conducted, and individuals with telescopes and cameras are invited to bring their equipment.
Fakas also mentioned a total solar eclipse occurring on the same date, visible from parts of western Europe but not Cyprus. This phenomenon will cause complete darkness for over two minutes in areas along the eclipse's path, accompanied by a temperature drop.
Meanwhile, Savvides revealed that the AstroVerce Astronomy Club, in partnership with the Cyprus Planetarium and with approval from the Department of Forests, is hosting an astronomy night at the Amiantos Astropark. He emphasized the potential to witness more than 100 meteors per hour during the peak on August 12, urging visitors to arrive from 19:00. Seven telescopes will be at attendees' disposal, and a presentation on the night sky and constellations is scheduled for 20:30. Visitors aiming to photograph the Perseids are welcome, and they are advised to bring warm clothes, chairs, food, and drinks, while strictly adhering to guidelines against lighting fires and leaving waste.
The Nightsky Explorers Club will also hold an event at the Amiantos Astropark starting at 20:00, offering opportunities to observe the Perseids, planets, stars, and other celestial objects through telescopes. Those wishing to stay overnight can bring sleeping bags or tents.
The Troodos Observatory announced that the meteor shower will peak from Wednesday night into the early hours of Thursday, August 13, with potentially up to 100 meteors per hour visible under optimal conditions. The observatory emphasized the moonless night sky's role in improving visibility, allowing even faint meteors to be observed.
Free stargazing will be available from 20:00 on Wednesday at the observatory in Agridia. The observatory's all-sky camera at the SPICA Observatory in Prodromos will stream live images of the night sky every evening on www.cosmos.cy/allsky. Visitors are urged to respect the natural environment and avoid any pollution, particularly lighting fires.
Additionally, a Perseid night is scheduled at the Kampos Astropark near the Kampos Forest Heritage Museum from 21:00, while the Larnaca Photography Club is organizing an astrophotography outing at the Prodromos reservoir in Troodos from 21:30, open to all interested in the night sky and photography.
