Nicosia: A total of 63,144 defective airbags have been replaced in Cyprus as part of an ongoing nationwide recall campaign, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works said on Monday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, data submitted by companies to the Department of Road Transport indicates that another 4,327 appointments have been scheduled for airbag replacements by the end of January 2026. These appointments concern vehicles whose roadworthiness certificates (MOT) were previously revoked due to non-compliance with the recall.
The recall initiative began in February 2025, when 81,060 affected vehicles were initially identified in Cyprus as part of a global campaign to address defective airbags. Of these, 7,134 vehicles have since been deregistered or declared immobilized, while 10,782 had their MOT certificates canceled due to failure to complete the recall. To date, 63,144 airbags have been successfully replaced.
The Ministry noted that the delivery of replacement parts is ongoing and depends on vehicle owner responsiveness and appointment scheduling. Most of the pending appointments are expected to be completed within November 2025.
In its statement, the Ministry said it is considering support measures for citizens who have already scheduled appointments through January 2026 and belong to vulnerable groups or are individuals with disabilities whose vehicles remain immobilized while awaiting parts.
The Ministry also urged vehicle owners who have not yet responded to the recall to do so promptly, stressing the importance of ensuring the safety of both drivers and passengers. It further urged companies to accelerate the supply of parts and enhance service delivery to affected citizens.
