Nicosia: The number of people employed in the publishing sector in Cyprus, including roles such as authors, journalists, and other language-related positions, experienced a significant drop of 28.4% in 2023 compared to 2022. This information was released by Eurostat, marking the most substantial decrease among EU member states.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the data provided by Eurostat does not include a detailed breakdown of employees by subcategory for 2023. In the European Union as a whole, 868,700 individuals were employed as authors, journalists, or linguists in 2023. This marked a 2.5% decrease compared to the previous year.
Germany employed the highest number of authors, journalists, or linguists in 2023, with 237,600 people, followed by France with 92,800, Spain with 74,200, Italy with 72,300, and Poland with 69,600. In contrast, Luxembourg, Latvia, and Lithuania saw significant growth in these professions, with increases of 67.5%, 43.1%, and 22.9% respectively.
Conversely, the largest relative decreases in employment within these fields were observed in Cyprus with a 28.4% reduction, Portugal with a 27.4% decline, and Slovenia with a 23.4% drop. Across the EU, there were 76,328 enterprises in the books and periodicals publishing industry in 2023. France led with the most enterprises at 23,648, followed by Spain, Germany, Czechia, and Italy.
