Nicosia Hosts 18th Conference of Speakers of Parliaments of Small European States

Nicosia: The 18th Conference of Speakers of Parliaments of the Small States of Europe, hosted in Nicosia by the House of Representatives, begins on Monday following an invitation from House President Annita Demetriou. The event is scheduled to take place from September 15 to 16.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the conference will feature participation from the Speakers of the Parliaments of Andorra, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Montenegro, and Monaco. Additionally, the Vice-President of the Parliament of Malta and representatives from the Co-Presidents of the Parliament of San Marino will also attend.

Demetriou will officially open the conference on Monday, September 15, at 10:00 AM. The conference will cover three main topics: ‘Participatory Democracy: Bringing Parliaments Closer to Citizens’, ‘Artificial Intelligence: Challenges, Opportunities and Best Practices for Parliaments of Small States’, and ‘Small States in Turbulent Times of Global Instability’.

Keynote speakers invited to the event include the Minister of Foreign Affairs Constantinos Kombos and the Deputy Minister of Research and Innovation and Digital Policy, Nicodemos Damianou. Both Cypriot and foreign experts on the subjects under discussion will contribute to the event.

In addition to the main sessions, participating officials will have the opportunity to meet with the President of the Republic of Cyprus. The conference will conclude with the adoption of a Joint Declaration by the Speakers of Parliaments of the Small States of Europe, followed by a joint press conference.
