Nicosia Flight Control Centre Will Ensure Uninterrupted Air Traffic, President Says

Nicosia: The Republic of Cyprus chooses, through actions rather than words, to be a source of stability and cooperation, ensuring the uninterrupted flow of air traffic and the continuation of international air connections, even in difficult times, said the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, on Wednesday in his address at the inauguration ceremony of the Nicosia Air Traffic Control Centre in Kokkinotrimithia.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the new Nicosia Flight Control Centre “significantly enhances flight safety, the credibility of our state, and the regional role of our country as a pillar of security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.” The President highlighted that through modern equipment, advanced technologies, and highly trained personnel, flight management adheres to the highest European and international safety standards, as set by the International Civil Aviation Organization and the European Union. The Centre’s operation strengthens Cyprus’s involvement in the creation of the Single European Sky, contributing to the development of the European transport network and passenger safety.

The Nicosia FIR covers an area of strategic importance in the Eastern Mediterranean, where geopolitical challenges are intense, President Christodoulides noted. He mentioned that during negotiations for resolving the Cyprus problem, the Nicosia FIR was a point of contention due to its strategic advantage for Cyprus.

President Christodoulides emphasized Cyprus’s role as a source of stability, especially during recent regional crises when the country managed increased flight loads safely. This demonstrated the reliability of Cyprus’s services and enhanced its international standing. The Centre’s modern infrastructure sends a message of consistency and reliability, even amidst challenges from countries like Turkey.

Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeades, stated that the Centre is a significant step in modernising the infrastructure and services of the Ministry. The project, adhering to international safety standards, ensures smooth and efficient air traffic management. The creation of the Centre is part of the Ministry’s strategy to enhance transport safety, upgrade the country’s prestige, and improve citizens’ services.

Vafeades concluded that, amid increasing air traffic and international challenges, a modern flight control centre guarantees flight safety and efficiency, reinforcing Cyprus’s position as an active member of the European aviation community.
