Nicosia: Nicosia has been awarded the title of European Best Cultural Capital and Best Cultural Destination for 2026, ranking 1st in Europe in the international competition of the European Best Destinations organization.
According to Cyprus News Agency, this prestigious distinction is further reinforced by an extensive feature in Forbes, which places Nicosia first among the ten best cultural cities in Europe and recommends it as the leading cultural destination for 2026.
In its feature, Forbes highlights Nicosia as a "city with a unique cultural identity, where history, contemporary creativity, and everyday life coexist in perfect harmony. From the Venetian walls and Byzantine heritage to modern galleries, festivals, creative workshops, and a vibrant artistic scene, the Cypriot capital is presented as an authentic European cultural experience-a city that does not merely preserve its past, but creatively reinterprets it."
It is noted that this international recognition "is the result of a multi-layered evaluation process that combined quantitative data, the opinions of specialized culture journalists and travel media, as well as the votes of thousands of travelers from more than 130 countries."
Nicosia, the press release reads, "stood out for the richness and authenticity of its cultural heritage, its dynamic contemporary artistic production, the density and quality of its cultural infrastructure, and the overall experience it offers to visitors."
Nicosia Tourism Board stresses that this achievement is the outcome of a targeted strategic initiative and systematic actions by the Board, in close collaboration with the Municipality of Nicosia. Through the development of a clear and modern narrative for the city, the mapping and documentation of its cultural wealth, and coordinated cooperation with the European Best Destinations organization, the Nicosia Tourism Board and the Municipality contributed decisively to this international success.
The award of Nicosia as European Best Cultural Capital 2026 significantly strengthens the city's international profile, confirms its momentum in culture, creativity, and sustainable urban tourism, and opens new prospects for international promotion and collaborations.
Nicosia now emerges as a contemporary European capital of culture, experiences, and creativity-deserving to be at the center of European and international attention in 2026, the press release concludes.
