Nicosia: President of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, hailed recent developments in the Cyprus issue as a positive step forward, marking the first movement in eight years towards resolving the long-standing conflict.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Kaklamanis made these remarks during a special session of the House of Representatives plenary in Nicosia, where he is on an official visit. The President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, emphasized the symbolic and political significance of Kaklamanis’s visit, highlighting the strong historical ties and shared commitment between Greece and Cyprus in maintaining a united front.
Demetriou spoke about the enduring cooperation between the two nations, underscoring the importance of the ‘Cyprus File’ publication, a significant endeavor aimed at fostering national self-awareness. She reiterated Cyprus’s appreciation for Greece’s steadfast support in efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem and stressed the need for a solution free from occupation and anachronistic guarantees.
Kaklamanis pointed out that any resolution to the Cyprus problem must include the withdrawal of illegal occupation troops and align with European Union principles. He noted the recent initiative by the UN Secretary-General and the President of Cyprus as a positive development, underscoring the unity within the Greek Parliament on this issue.
Demetriou expressed gratitude for Greece’s unwavering support and reiterated the Republic of Cyprus’s commitment to achieving a viable solution within the framework of the UN, emphasizing that the Turkish side’s two-state solution demand is unacceptable. She urged Turkey to decide whether it wants to be part of a peaceful resolution, criticizing its current stance and actions.
Kaklamanis reaffirmed Greece’s support for Cyprus, praising the collaborative efforts between the two nations in international forums. He highlighted recent informal meetings led by the United Nations as a hopeful step towards resuming negotiations for a comprehensive solution.
As Cyprus approaches the upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Demetriou emphasized the role of parliaments in promoting a stronger, more resilient European Union. She assured that the House of Representatives will continue to strengthen cooperation with the Greek Parliament to advocate for regional peace and stability.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern part. Despite numerous UN-led negotiations, a lasting solution has yet to be achieved.
