Montenegro’s EU Accession Gains Support from Cyprus

Nicosia: Cyprus is a committed friend of Montenegro and a strong supporter of EU enlargement, President of Montenegro Jakov Milatovic has said. In a post on 'X', Milatovic expressed gratitude to President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides for his support and stated his confidence in beginning the preparatory work for Montenegro's Accession Treaty during Cyprus's Presidency of the EU Council. He also expressed anticipation for his visit to Nicosia on 18 May to further discussions on Montenegro's EU accession.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides acknowledged the progress with the establishment of an ad hoc working party on the accession treaty for Montenegro. He emphasized Cyprus's continued commitment to supporting Montenegro's journey towards EU membership.

Cyprus recorded a seasonally adjusted government surplus of 4.0% of GDP in the fourth quarter of 2025, while the European Union as a whole posted a deficit of 3.2% of GDP, according to data published by Eurostat on Wednesday. The figures indicate that Cyprus maintained a positive fiscal balance throughout 2025, with fluctuations across the quarters. The surplus was highest at 5.0% in the first quarter and ended the year at 4.0%.

In contrast, the euro area recorded a general government deficit of 3.0% of GDP in the fourth quarter of 2025, with the European Union's deficit slightly increasing to 3.2% from the previous quarter.
