Nicosia: Cyprus is a predictable, safe ally of India and its portal to the EU, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Monday while bestowing India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, Cyprus’s highest order of merit. Modi said this honour was a great responsibility for him to strengthen the bonds of friendship between India and Cyprus, pledging to do so.
According to Cyprus News Agency, during the ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, President Christodoulides expressed his pleasure in welcoming Modi to Cyprus, marking the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister in 23 years. He emphasized the importance of the visit as a reflection of the commitment to enhance relations between the two countries across various sectors such as economy, trade, defence, security, technology, and connectivity.
President Christodoulides highlighted the significance of the joint declaration to be signed, which aims to open a new chapter in the bilateral relations. He described Cyprus as a reliable ally of India, given its strategic position in the eastern Mediterranean and as a member of the EU, serving as a gateway for India to the European Union. He also expressed gratitude for India’s support regarding the Cyprus problem and efforts to counter international and cross-border terrorism.
The Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III was presented to Modi as a token of appreciation for the visit and the potential it holds for future cooperation at the European and international levels. Modi, in turn, thanked the Government and people of Cyprus, acknowledging the honour as a recognition of the strengths and aspirations of 1.4 billion Indians.
Modi dedicated the award to the friendship between India and Cyprus, underscoring shared values and mutual respect. He accepted the honour on behalf of all Indians, viewing it as a symbol of commitment to peace, security, sovereignty, and prosperity. Modi expressed confidence in the future of the partnership, aiming for greater heights and a joint effort towards global peace and security.
Prior to the ceremony, President Christodoulides officially welcomed Modi at the Presidential Palace. During his two-day official visit, Modi paid tribute by laying a wreath at the statue of Archbishop Makarios, Cyprus’ first President.
