Men’s Role in Breaking Down Stereotypes Crucial, Gender Equality Commissioner Says

Copenhagen: The role of men as active allies in breaking down stereotypes is crucial, Cyprus’ Commissioner for Gender Equality, Josie Christodoulou, said, in a discussion at a conference of the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU on men, boys, and gender equality.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Christodoulou participated in the conference, which took place on Tuesday in Copenhagen, in the context of the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU. The event was attended by European officials, heads of non-governmental organizations, youth organizations, and academics.

Christodoulou engaged in a discussion with the Danish Minister for Environment and Gender Equality, Magnus Heunicke, on the importance of including men and boys in promoting gender equality. The Commissioner emphasized that the involvement of men is essential as gender inequality affects them as well. She noted that gender stereotypes and societal perceptions about the qualities expected of men limit their potential, making their role as active allies in breaking down stereotypes crucial.

According to the press release, Christodoulou identified factors preventing men from actively participating in the dialogue on gender equality, including deep-rooted social perceptions, social stigma, and fear of negative criticism. She also highlighted measures being implemented in Cyprus to involve men and boys in the effort for gender equality, such as school programs to encourage reflection on stereotypes, mentoring initiatives connecting young men with role models, and the creation of a group of young people to influence policy-making.

On the sidelines of the conference, the Commissioner had lunch with Danish Minister Magnus Heunicke and Irena Moozov¡, Deputy Director-General for the International Dimension of Justice Policies, Rule of Law and Equality, of the EU Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers.
