The UK's Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who is expected to take the helm at the Foreign Office should Labour win this Thursday's general election, has stated that his party continues to support a bizonal, bicommunal federation as a settlement in the long-standing Cyprus issue. Speaking to a Foreign Press Association event in London on Monday, Lammy was asked about Labour's position, but also about the lack of reference to Cyprus in his party's manifesto - a reference that features in the Conservatives' election pledges. 'We remain committed to a bizonal, bicommunal federated system and the UN process as it takes place and we will play our role in that process. Of course I want to see peace and stability to a conflict that's now gone on for 50 years,' said Lammy. He added that his north London constituency (Tottenham) 'has been historically one of the natural homes of many Cypriots, I grew up with many Cypriots in my part of north London, so I have been well aware of that conflict now for many many y ears indeed.'
