Nicosia: Greece and Cyprus must remain united in the struggle for liberation and reunification of the island, President of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis stated on Wednesday. His remarks followed a military parade in Nicosia on the anniversary of Cyprus’ independence.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Kaklamanis highlighted the sacrifices made by thousands of Greek Cypriots in the pursuit of Cyprus’ independence. He stressed the importance of honoring their memory by strengthening the unity between Greece and Cyprus to achieve the national goal of reunification.
Kaklamanis further emphasized the need for the withdrawal of Turkey’s occupation troops and the resolution of issues such as the missing persons and the release of five Greek Cypriots detained on July 19 by the ‘authorities’ of the illegal regime in occupied Cyprus.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of the northern third of the island. Despite numerous rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution has not yet been reached. The most recent negotiations, held in July 2017 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended without an agreement.
