Justice Minister Announces New Measures to Ease Overcrowding in Nicosia Central Prisons

Nicosia: Minister of Justice and Public Order, Constantinos Fitiris, announced immediate interventions to address the overcrowding at Nicosia Central Prisons. These measures include improving inmates' living conditions and enhancing supervision and control following a meeting with President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Fitiris briefed President Christodoulides on a recent incident involving the death of a convicted inmate, as well as the overall situation at the Central Prisons. Fitiris assured the President of his commitment to implementing swift and comprehensive interventions to tackle the long-standing issues in the facility.

The Ministry of Justice and Public Order has prioritized the adoption of immediate, medium-term, and long-term strategies to decongest the Central Prisons. The aim is to improve the living conditions of inmates and upgrade supervision and control systems. These efforts are intended to eliminate delinquent and criminal behavior within the institution, ensuring compliance with the Rule of Law and international and national laws regarding the protection of the human rights of all detainees, as well as administrative staff and security personnel.
