Japan Offers Postgraduate Scholarships to Cypriots for 2026

Nicosia: The Embassy of Japan in Cyprus has announced that the Ministry of Education of the Japanese Government (MEXT) is extending an invitation to Cypriot nationals born on or after April 2, 1991, to apply for postgraduate scholarships for the year 2026. These scholarships are aimed at individuals wishing to pursue Master’s or PhD degrees as research students at Japanese universities.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the scholarship program is set for a duration of two years, with the option for extension if needed to complete studies. For students without prior Japanese language knowledge, a mandatory semester of language courses in Japan is included, with all associated expenses covered. The scholarship also encompasses travel expenses to and from Japan, university tuition, a student visa, and a monthly stipend ranging from 143,000 to 145,000 YEN, which is approximately 900 EURO as of April 24, 2025. This stipend also covers accommodation costs.

The selection process is scheduled for June and begins with an evaluation of application documents. This is followed by assessments through written examinations in English and Japanese, alongside a personal interview. Notably, proficiency in Japanese is not a prerequisite, encouraging applicants even without language skills to apply. Successful candidates from the application document screening will undergo written exams and interviews in the first week of July.

The deadline for application submissions is set for Friday, June 13 at 16:45, with no exceptions for late entries, as emphasized by the Embassy. Interested individuals are encouraged to visit the Embassy’s website for more details at www.cy.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_ja/11_000001_00056.html.
