Nicosia: Attorney-General George Savvides assured on Wednesday that the investigation into a video alleging access to the Government, financing, and investments would proceed, noting that the Law Office has given instructions for completion as soon as possible.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Savvides announced his appointment of Andreas Paschalides as an independent criminal investigator to assist the Police in relation to all matters concerning the video. Paschalides' mandate includes examining the video's content, authenticity, origin, motives for production and publication, along with any potential hybrid attack scenarios.
Savvides emphasized that the investigation began 'from the very beginning' and spans 'various directions both in Cyprus and abroad'. He stated that it was 'not right' to provide daily updates on the case but assured that the Law Office is closely monitoring the situation in consultation with the Police and other state services.
Regarding international assistance, Savvides mentioned that due to the video's production and distribution facets, testimonies and legal assistance from abroad will be necessary. The Police plan to send the video to foreign authorities to gather necessary responses and measures.
When asked about seeking assistance from the US, particularly because the video was posted on Elon Musk's X platform, Savvides indicated that this depends on various factors and that specific aspects and goals should remain undisclosed for now.
Clarifying the timing of appointing the criminal investigator, Savvides stated that decisions are made based on necessity rather than external pressures. He also noted the precedent for appointing independent criminal investigators in serious cases to work alongside the Police.
Savvides concluded by expressing his preference to keep the investigative team's work out of the public eye, ensuring that the investigation proceeds without unnecessary exposure.
