Nicosia: The UN Secretary-General's visit to Cyprus was a sign of the heightened interest shown by the international community, the UN, and the EU in the Cyprus issue, President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, said on Wednesday evening, adding that the EU Special Envoy for the Cyprus issue, Raffaele Fitto, will be in Cyprus on Friday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides made these remarks during a reception at the Presidential Palace in honor of delegates attending the World Conference of Overseas Cypriots. He emphasized that this diplomatic activity was the result of a strategic approach that demonstrates how clear objectives and coherent strategies can enhance the country's influence and standing.
Addressing members of the Cypriot diaspora, President Christodoulides acknowledged their invaluable and decisive contributions to these efforts. The event also served to honor Cypriots living abroad and friends of Cyprus for their contributions, with the President recognizing the critical role the diaspora plays as ambassadors for the nation's interests.
During his speech, the President highlighted the significance of the UN Secretary-General's visit to Cyprus, which he viewed as a further indication of the increased international interest in the Cyprus issue. He stressed that Cyprus is leveraging its EU membership to restart negotiations and address the substance of a settlement, underlining that the Cyprus issue is a priority for the European Union.
The President pointed out that the European Council's conclusions in April 2024 and the appointment of Raffaele Fitto as Special Envoy for the Cyprus issue reflect the EU's commitment to the matter. He reiterated the crucial importance of the diaspora's continued contribution to these efforts.
Turning to domestic issues, the President discussed the government's actions to address challenges such as migration, emphasizing the progress made since March 2023. He also mentioned efforts to strengthen Cyprus' deterrence capabilities and improve economic resilience, which, in turn, allow investments in healthcare, education, and other societal benefits.
The event celebrated the achievements of the Cypriot diaspora, with honorary distinctions presented in several categories. In the 'Distinguished Cypriot Abroad' category, Anthe Phillipides and Catherine Sophia Constantinides were recognized for their international contributions. The 'Cypriots Abroad with Long-standing and Significant Service to Cyprus' category honored Andreas Papaevrypides, Dino Miltiadous, Evagoras Mavrommatis, and Eleftherios Gavriilides for their dedication to promoting Cyprus' national interests.
The 'Foreign National with Outstanding Contribution to Supporting Cyprus' National Causes' award was presented to Ari Babikian. His efforts as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, Canada, have been instrumental in advocating for Cyprus and supporting Greek and Cypriot communities.
