Nicosia: A paper by a research team from the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) has achieved was awarded the Best Student Paper Award at the 22nd international conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations (AIAI 2026). A press release issued by CUT said that the paper was entitled "Interactive Retrieval-Governed LLM Tutoring for Surgical Site Infection Prevention Education". According to Cyprus News Agency, the conference, organized under the auspices of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and Working Group 12.5 "Applications of Artificial Intelligence", was held in a hybrid format on July 16-19, 2026, at the Mediterranean Institute for Environmental Studies (MAICh) in Chania, Crete. It brought together researchers from all over the world in the field of Artificial Intelligence. The CUT team's goal was to develop a prototype Artificial Intelligence tool that supports, in a safe and scientifically documented way, the education of nurses in the prevention of surgical site infections. The research team, with members from the Department of Nursing and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering and Informatics of CUT, created SurgiNurse AI, an interactive educational environment designed to support learning around the prevention of surgical site infections. The platform uses Large Language Models and information retrieval technologies, ensuring that the answers and educational material produced are based on selected and verified scientific sources. At the same time, it can create explanations, educational cards, and multiple-choice questions, offering a more interactive and personalized learning experience. "This distinction highlights the power of collaboration between different scientific fields. At the same time, it confirms that when clinical knowledge, educational experience, and technological innovation meet around a common goal, solutions with substantial value for education and, more broadly, for the quality of healthcare can be crea ted," the press release concluded.
