House President Urges Stronger EU-Citizen Communication in Meeting with Commission Representation’s Head

Nicosia: House President, Annita Demetriou, stressed the need to strengthen communication between the European Union and its citizens during a meeting with Panicos Pourgourides, the new Head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Demetriou congratulated Pourgourides on assuming his new duties and emphasized the importance the Cypriot Parliament places on its cooperation with the European Commission’s Representation. She expressed readiness for a structured and ongoing dialogue, both in view of Cyprus’ upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union and more broadly.

Pourgourides assured the House President of the Commission Representation’s commitment and his own, to further strengthening close and productive cooperation with the Parliament for the benefit of EU citizens, the press release noted.

Addressing current challenges that the EU faces, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and the need to bolster European defence, Demetriou stressed that the Union must lead efforts to address these issues while remaining faithful to its core principles and values.

Demetriou also highlighted the importance of improving communication between the EU and the public, noting the need for increased awareness of European policies and their positive impact on citizens’ daily lives. She expressed the Parliament’s readiness to support this objective through joint initiatives and actions.
