Cyprus’ House President, Annita Demetriou on Tuesday thanked Theodore II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, for his valuable support to Cyprus and its people in its struggle for an end to the Turkish occupation and finding a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem.
According to an announcement by the House of Representatives, Demetriou had a meeting with the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, Theodore II, who is visiting Cyprus. MP Panikos Leonidou, head of the Parliament’s delegation to the Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy, was present at the meeting, it adds.
Demetriou, welcoming the Patriarch, ‘expressed her sincere thanks for his valuable support to Cyprus and its people’ in its struggle during the past 50 years for an end to the Turkish occupation and finding a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem, according to the UN Resolutions, the announcement said.
The Patriarch, it adds, ‘conveyed the message of love and peace to the Cypriot people, wishing for justice to
come in their long struggle’.
Before the meeting, the Patriarch, Theodore II, signed the Guest Book of the House of Representatives.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
