Nicosia:The lessons from Greece's 1940 resistance against Italian fascism during World War II hold significant relevance for Cyprus, which continues to grapple with the aftermath of the 1974 Turkish invasion and ongoing occupation, stated House President Annita Demetriou in an address before the Plenary.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Demetriou emphasized that the historic 'OXI' (NO) serves as a reminder of the duty to uphold national sovereignty, international law, and fundamental freedoms. She insisted that unity, perseverance, and commitment to principles are essential in the ongoing struggle for a free, reunited, and peaceful Cyprus, aligning with the aspirations of future generations.
Demetriou noted the contribution of thousands of Cypriot volunteers who fought in the 1940 battles, highlighting their sacrifices as integral to historical memory and the strong ties between the Cypriot issue and metropolitan Hellenism. She paid tribute to those who demonstrated courage and self-sacrifice in defending human dignity against fascist barbarity.
The Plenary session included a minute of silence in memory of all who fought against fascism and Nazism.
