House President Highlights Gender Equality Efforts at European Conference

Rome:House of Representatives President Annita Demetriou emphasized Cyprus' ongoing efforts to integrate gender equality into public policy during her intervention at the 28th European Conference of Presidents of Parliament of the Council of Europe member states.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the conference began with a working breakfast for female Presidents of Parliaments, where Demetriou focused on the importance of strengthening collective women's action in defending their rights. She stressed that gender equality is a strategic priority essential for building strong economies, resilient institutions, and fairer societies.

During her speech, Demetriou highlighted the structural inequalities faced by women and called for comprehensive institutional and policy interventions to address these issues. She noted the ongoing discrimination women face online, including hate speech and sexist behavior, which undermine their dignity and ability to pursue public office. Demetriou advocated adopting a unified regulatory framework that encompasses social media to counter these challenges.

On Cyprus' progress, Demetriou pointed out significant advancements toward achieving gender equality, particularly through legislative mandates integrating gender perspectives into public policy and the state budget. However, she noted the priority is to turn these commitments into tangible, measurable outcomes, focusing on women's economic independence and equal participation in public life.

Demetriou also addressed the critical issue of violence against women and girls, including femicide. As the initiator of Cypriot legislation recognizing femicide as a distinct criminal offense, she highlighted the importance of strengthening legislative frameworks and inter-parliamentary cooperation to protect women from gender-based violence. The initiative led by Demetriou was the first in Europe and influenced similar legislative measures in Malta, Italy, and Croatia.

She concluded by emphasizing the pivotal role parliaments play in promoting gender equality policies, such as equal opportunities and zero-tolerance for discrimination or gender-based violence. Demetriou stressed the need for implementing enacted legislation and raising public awareness regarding these issues.
