House President Highlights European Parliament’s Support on Cyprus Issue

Nicosia: House President Annita Demetriou emphasized the House of Representatives’ commitment to contributing effectively to the success of the forthcoming Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. She communicated this during a meeting with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and heads of the EP’s political groups in Nicosia.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Demetriou expressed appreciation for the European Parliament’s consistent support on the Cyprus issue, highlighting its role during crucial times, including matters concerning Famagusta, recognition of gender-based violence against Cypriot women in 1974, and efforts to resolve the fate of missing persons. Nicosia remains dedicated to the liberation and reunification of Cyprus.

Demetriou acknowledged Metsola’s visit amidst geopolitical instability as a significant gesture of unity and solidarity. She noted that values like peace, democracy, and human rights are central to European identity and emphasized the day’s discussion topic on safeguarding EU values as increasingly pertinent.

Addressing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Demetriou condemned it as a violation of international law and a threat to European security, highlighting the forced transfer of Ukrainian children as a grave humanitarian breach. Cyprus supports the European Parliament’s resolution for their safe return.

Demetriou also discussed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, challenges in the Middle East, and the rise of extremist ideologies, underlining the fragility of peace and the need for decisive action. She expressed concern over the overshadowing of human rights by wartime agendas, risking a reversal of progress.

As a nation affected by Turkish invasion and occupation, Cyprus values peace and security, consistently advocating for cessation of hostilities and respect for sovereignty. Demetriou underscored the role of parliamentary diplomacy in upholding EU values, promoting democracy, peace, and security.

During the Cypriot EU Presidency, Cyprus aims to strengthen Europe with priorities like enhancing ties with the Middle East, supporting humanitarian efforts, showing solidarity with Ukraine, and fostering cooperation with the EU’s Southern Neighbourhood.
