House President Emphasizes Importance of Dialogue for Peace

Nicosia: House President Annita Demetriou underscored the critical role of dialogue in achieving sustainable and lasting peace as she addressed the House plenary. She pointed out that Cyprus, having experienced the illegal Turkish invasion and gross human rights violations, deeply understands the value of dialogue in conflict resolution and peace-building.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Demetriou emphasized that dialogue between citizens and institutions is crucial for protecting and strengthening the rule of law, which is a fundamental aspect of democracy. Her speech coincided with the International Day of Democracy on September 15, a day that prompts reflection on the global state of democracy and the pivotal role of parliaments in safeguarding and reinforcing democratic institutions.

Demetriou asserted, "Parliaments must prove worthy of their role as 'temples of Democracy' and work for greater participation, transparency, and accountability, so that citizens can regain their trust in institutions." She reassured that the House of Representatives is steadfast in its commitment to upholding democratic ideals, equality, and serving citizens with respect for human rights, placing human dignity above all.
