Nicosia:During a meeting, House of Representatives President Annita Demetriou and Spanish Ambassador Mercedes Alonso Frayle discussed various topics, including bilateral relations, migration in light of developments in Ceuta, the Cyprus issue, and the regional situation.
According to Cyprus News Agency, both Demetriou and Alonso Frayle emphasized the strong friendship between Cyprus and Spain, rooted in shared principles and values, mutual respect in international law, and their common EU membership. They noted the importance of maintaining the momentum in bilateral exchanges following the Spanish Congress President's official visit to Cyprus in 2025 and expressed a desire to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest such as migration challenges and the rising cost of living.
Demetriou expressed Cyprus's solidarity with Spain regarding the migration crisis in Ceuta, stressing the need for collective EU action to address this issue. Alonso Frayle highlighted the positive development of increased connectivity between the two countries, which could foster further exchanges.
Regarding the Cyprus issue, Demetriou expressed disappointment over the lack of progress at the UN General Assembly, attributing it to Turkey's intransigent stance. She rejected the Turkish side's "two-state" solution proposal, stating it would legitimize Turkey's illegal invasion and occupation. Demetriou reaffirmed Cyprus's readiness to engage in negotiations for a bicommunal federal solution aligned with international law and UN resolutions.
Demetriou also underscored the significance of security and stability in a time of mounting challenges in the Middle East and beyond. She cited the Ukraine situation to highlight the importance of consistently applying international law principles without exceptions or double standards.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern part. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, no resolution has been reached due to Turkish inflexibility. The last negotiation attempt in July 2017 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended without success. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres plans to convene another broader meeting after adequate preparation, with Mara Angela Holgun and Raffaele Fitto playing key roles as international representatives in this effort.
