House President and Arab League Secretary-General Discuss Importance of International Law Cooperation

Nicosia: The importance of cooperation in strengthening international law and acting in accordance with it was expressed by House President Annita Demetriou and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, on Thursday.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Demetriou had a meeting with Gheit in her office at the House of Representatives in Nicosia. Welcoming the Arab League Secretary-General, she noted that it has been a year since her visit to Egypt, which she described as a 'very successful' one, considering their discussions there about respect for international law and the need to confront global complexities through synergies.

Gheit emphasized the increased necessity of applying international law, especially in light of current global developments. He highlighted the situation 'everywhere' in the world, including regions such as Israel, Palestine, Europe, and Latin America. He stressed that parliaments, human rights activists, and international organizations must be active in applying, strengthening, or consolidating international law.

Demetriou reflected on historical practices where the use of force was prevalent, and noted the importance of realizing that 'the only answer is compliance with our norms and principles and international law' to achieve peace and stability.
