Nicosia: Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign and European Affairs Harris Georgiades expressed Cyprus’ support for the European perspective of the Western Balkans. He was speaking during a meeting with representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Western Balkan countries, who are visiting Cyprus in view of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026.
According to Cyprus News Agency, a press release issued by the Parliament said that during the meeting, Georgiades expressed Cyprus’ support for the European perspective of the Western Balkans, noting that the enlargement process must remain open to all European states, provided that they meet the criteria for accession.
With regard to Turkey, he pointed out that Cyprus does not object to the accession process provided that Ankara would carry out the necessary reforms and comply with its obligations towards the Union and in relation to Cyprus.
Concluding, he expressed hope that the European path of the Western Balkans will be completed as soon as possible and assured the participants of the constructive role that the House of Representatives wishes to play for progress in the field of EU enlargement.
The high-ranking officials expressed their gratitude for the positive political message of the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs in favor of the EU enlargement to the Western Balkans.
They noted the significant importance that Cyprus, due to its geostrategic position, attaches to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East region and expressed their appreciation for the fact that the promotion of the enlargement is among the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.
Finally, they reaffirmed their commitment to the goal of completing the European path of the Western Balkans and referred to the progress achieved so far, but also to the difficulties in terms of the necessary reforms in their countries.
