Nicosia: In 2024, 68% of the population living in households in the European Union owned their home, according to data released today by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat). As noted by Eurostat, this represents a slight decrease compared to 69% in 2023. The remaining 32% of the population lived in rented accommodation, up from 31% the previous year.
According to Cyprus News Agency, with regard to Cyprus, Eurostat data shows that during the same period, the home ownership rate stood at 69.4%, while the remaining share of the population lived in rented housing.
The highest rates of home ownership were recorded in Romania (94%), followed by Slovakia (93%), Hungary (92%), and Croatia (91%).
In most EU countries, home ownership remains the predominant form of housing, with the exception of Germany, where 53% of the population lives in rented accommodation. Germany is followed by Austria (46%), Denmark (39%), and France (38.8%).
