Nicosia: The UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Mar­a Angela Holgu­n, will speak with the Secretary-General by phone to update him on her work, as she will not be attending meetings in New York. This update comes following the cancellation of her planned visits to New York and Cyprus, as confirmed by UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.

According to Cyprus News Agency, during a press briefing at the UN Headquarters in New York, Dujarric responded to inquiries by confirming that Holgu­n canceled her trips for health reasons. "I can officially confirm that Maria A. Holgu­n had to cancel her visit to both New York, where she was going to meet with the Secretary-General, and to Cyprus," Dujarric stated. He further emphasized that Holgu­n's decision was due to health issues.

Holgu­n will maintain communication with the Secretary-General through a phone call to provide updates on her activities. Dujarric also mentioned that Holgu­n continues to engage closely with Cypriot leaders and their representatives despite her inability to travel.

Cyprus remains divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of the northern part of the island. UN-led peace talks have yet to achieve a resolution, primarily due to Turkish resistance. The last significant negotiations took place in July 2017 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, but ended without success.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, nearing the conclusion of his term, has expressed intentions to convene another meeting involving all relevant parties, pending sufficient preparation. While no timeline has been provided, consensus from both sides and the guarantor powers has been secured. Holgu­n's role includes engaging with all involved parties to facilitate progress in the peace talks. Additionally, Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto serves as the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, taking over from former EU special envoy Johannes Hahn.
