Nicosia: Health services remain on alert and will continue to do so throughout the day, assured the Minister of Health, Michalis Damianos, at Nicosia General Hospital. He stated that his ministry is adhering strictly to protocol.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Damianos made these remarks following his visit to Nicosia General Hospital, where he was briefed about two burn victims in serious condition. The Health Services have been on alert since the previous day, with a First Aid Centre established at Erimi stadium; both private and public hospitals remain on standby.
The Minister highlighted that “at the centre initially set up in Kyvides and then in Erimi, 38 people received first aid by Thursday morning,” adding that sixteen individuals were transferred to Limassol General Hospital, from which the two most seriously injured patients were moved to Nicosia General Hospital.
Three cases were admitted in Limassol, while eleven others were discharged. Additionally, two cases were transferred to Troodos Hospital, and 12 individuals received first aid for respiratory problems in the community of Malia, provided by the Ambulance Service.
When questioned about the burn victims, Damianos mentioned that one case was more severe but assured they were ‘out of danger,’ while the Limassol cases were less serious.
Addressing media reports about one victim with burns on 35% of their body, Damianos confirmed that ‘the one admitted to Nicosia General Hospital is the serious case, I cannot say more.’
Damianos also outlined the ministry’s current plan, emphasizing that ‘services are on alert to treat anyone in need of medical attention.’ He assured that beds are available and specialists are on standby to provide necessary assistance.
The Cyprus Medical Association and the German Medical Institute have pledged support for those affected by the fire in Limassol and are prepared to offer medical support. The Cyprus Medical Association also commends professionals and volunteers working under challenging conditions to protect public health and provide care.
The Association reiterated the medical community’s readiness to assist in partnership with the Cyprus Respiratory Society and the Ministry of Health, especially in addressing respiratory issues from smoke inhalation and toxic exposure.
