Limassol: Head of European Investment Bank (EIB) Nadia Calvi±o emphasized the bank’s ongoing commitment to supporting Cyprus, highlighting the island’s vulnerability to climate change, particularly in terms of water resources. During her visit to the EIB-financed West Limassol Wastewater Treatment Plant, Calvi±o remarked on Cyprus’s efforts to adapt to climate change, enhance its people’s quality of life, and invest in circular economy and new technologies.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Calvi±o expressed her emotional response to the project, noting the presence of the European flag as a symbol of shared values and collective strength. She affirmed the EIB’s determination to continue its support for Cyprus and Limassol, underscoring the pride and satisfaction felt by all involved. Calvi±o expressed hope that the project would remain a flagship initiative for years to come.
Delivering remarks on behalf of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Minister Maria Panayiotou, Permanent Secretary Andreas Gregoriou highlighted the West Limassol Wastewater Treatment Plant as a landmark in water management since its operation began in October 2022. The project combines advanced wastewater treatment, reclaimed water production, and renewable energy, contributing significantly to national water security amid climate change and increasing scarcity.
Gregoriou acknowledged the invaluable contribution of the EIB to Cyprus’s water and sewerage infrastructure, noting its role in advancing national priorities and aligning Cyprus with EU standards. He emphasized the optimism brought by the Bank’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure, which secures the future of communities, protects public health, and delivers lasting benefits.
Moreover, Gregoriou pledged the Ministry’s focus on resilience through water reuse, digital transformation, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy integration. He highlighted the exceptional importance of the partnership with the EIB and expressed a determination to strengthen it further.
