Nicosia: Hammer thrower Valentina Savva secured on Friday the bronze medal at the 2025 European Athletics U23 Championships taking place in Bergen, Norway. This is Cyprus’ first medal at the event.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Amateur Athletic Association of Cyprus, KOEAS, posted on social media that the Cyprus athlete, coached by George Aresti, outdid her personal best in three throws, broke the Cypriot record twice, and became the first Cypriot hammer thrower to exceed 70 meters, with 70.05m in her first throw and 70.22m last Thursday.
This performance could secure Valentina the qualification for the World Championships in Tokyo.
The award ceremony is taking place Saturday afternoon. This is Valentina’s third medal at a European event. She won gold medals at U18 and U20 Championships.
Cyprus athlete Emilia Kolokotroni also competed in the hammer throw final and won ninth place with a throw of 64.39m.
