Nicosia: The presence of F-16 Viper jets over Cyprus during the military parade underscores the unified defence doctrine between Cyprus and Greece, stated Thanasis Davakis, Deputy Minister of National Defence of Greece. Davakis represented Athens in the parade for the island’s independence day, which took place on Wednesday in Nicosia.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Davakis expressed that he felt emotional being in Cyprus and highlighted his pride in commemorating the 65th anniversary of Cyprus’ independence with a sense of historical responsibility and duty. He emphasized the importance of remembering those who fought for the nation’s freedom, especially the fallen, and noted Cyprus’ resilience through challenges with a commitment to democratic values and international law.
Davakis elaborated on the ties between Cyprus and Greece, describing them as historical, unbreakable, and indestructible. He affirmed the determination of both countries to work towards a comprehensive, mutually acceptable, just, and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue.
He further mentioned that Cyprus’ reunification and the withdrawal of illegal Turkish occupation troops remain goals to be achieved through a solution based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality for Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, as outlined in relevant UN resolutions.
Davakis concluded by stating that the anniversary of Cyprus’ independence is not just a historical milestone but a living historical symbol for Cyprus, representing courage and endurance. It also serves as a response to those attempting to undermine its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite numerous rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution has yet to be reached, with the latest negotiations in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ending without success.
